The National Grange issues statement encouraging fair and lasting trade agreements to protect rural livelihoods

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Grange continues to work on behalf of all Americans by serving as a nonpartisan voice in Washington, DC. We are carefully watching the ongoing conversations surrounding tariffs and a potential trade war with our neighboring countries, and will continue to advocate for the farmers, ranchers, and all citizens who may be negatively affected by them.

Today, National Grange President Christine E. Hamp issued the following statement:

“The National Grange appreciates President Trump, President Sheinbaum, and Prime Minister Trudeau’s efforts to avoid a potentially disastrous U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade war by pausing tariffs for 30 days and making additional concessions and deals on all sides to reach this agreement.

Rural America depends on agriculture, and agriculture depends on trade. Mexico and Canada are two of our largest agricultural trading partners, and any disruption in these relationships would have devastating consequences for farmers, ranchers, and the small businesses that sustain our rural communities.

Tariffs aren’t just numbers on a balance sheet—they drive up costs for American families, especially those struggling to make ends meet in small towns and rural communities. Higher prices on farm equipment, fuel, and everyday goods would squeeze working families and Main Street businesses alike. A full-blown trade war would mean fewer jobs, lower incomes, and increased financial strain for millions of Americans.

We urge all parties to use this grace period to negotiate a fair and lasting agreement that protects rural livelihoods, strengthens our economy, and ensures that the burden of trade disputes does not fall on the backs of hardworking Americans.”
