The President's Message

JUST IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES IN PORTLAND

The Annual Convention
The 136th Annual Convention, to be held in Portland, Oregon, Nov. 11-17, 2002, is evolving into one of the most special meetings the Grange has ever convened.

The National Grange-aided by the incredible planning of its dedicated host, the Oregon State Grange-has planned a member-friendly convention by providing workshops, craft exhibitions, professional organization exhibits, youth activities, an Oregon State Tour and, of course, the annual talent show. The conferral of the Sixth and Seventh Degree will also take place.

It's a good start as the Grange begins to develop a member-oriented annual convention where Grangers from across the nation can gather for a few days to celebrate both the history of the Grange and the promise of an exciting future. In the past the convention has primarily centered on the grassroots legislative process and on the national delegates. That important work will continue with a shorter agenda as activities begin to focus equally on events that are good fun, rural issue oriented, educational and of interest to the general membership.

As always, I look forward to seeing you at the annual convention!

Thank you
The Family of Helen Largin wishes to express its sincere appreciation for your thoughtful expressions of sympathy and love. At a time like this our friends are truly appreciated. May God Bless you, Herma and Paula Clement Margaret and Kermit Richardson and family.

Action Granges
In July, I had the opportunity to attend an Action Grange Seminar in Toledo, Ohio, and was both impressed with, and very encouraged by, the materials presented and the "no-holds-barred" exchange of ideas. The response of the 60 attendees was very positive, and indeed, the responses I've received from a vast majority of attendees at all the seminars have been excellent.

The Action Grange program will continue to have my full support over the next year so that the remaining seminars can be held in states around the country.

The program has caused us to reevaluate and breathe fresh air into the way we traditional Grangers think about Grange business and community activities. The Grange will always possess a rich tradition that will neither fade nor be forgotten, yet in a new century and a new world we need to continue to adapt and expand our activities in our communities, in order to attract new members and retain the faithful. The Action Grange has allowed us to make some landmark, if not difficult decisions, and I am grateful to those members who have been willing to stick with the program and open their minds to new ideas.

Fraternally,

Kermit W. Richardson

GRANGE FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT AND MEMORIALS
TO BEGIN CAMPAIGN
By: Jeanne Davies, Chairman

Many Granger members have been sending contributions to the National Grange Endowment Fund in memory of someone who has died. As a memorial gift a donation to the Endowment fund is a lasting tribute to the memory of the deceased. When a donation is made the National Grange sends a card to the family of the individual in whose name the donation has been made, thanking the donor for his or her generous contribution. A donation may be made both by an individual, or an entire Grange.

Contributions are greatly appreciated and a record of contributors will be kept in the records of the Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund is part of the National Grange Foundation, which funds programs including Junior Grange activities and educational programs.

For more information on the National Grange Foundation or the Endowment Fund please contact:

GRANGE GERMANY/USA FRIENDSHIP PROGRAM TO HOLD REUNION

September 20-23, 2002, participants in the Grange Germany/USA Friendship Program will reunite in Columbus, Ohio at a reunion celebrating more than 50 years of international friendship, goodwill and cooperation. The reunion will feature celebrations of past successes and meetings to discuss future programs. A memorial service commemorating past participants in the exchange program will also be held at the reunion.

The Grange Germany/USA Friendship program was initiated in 1950 to promote education, understanding and friendship between Granger members and German youths who participated in the exchange program. Between 1950 and 1956 Grange families hosted more than 500 rural youth exchanges. Since that time many of these families have kept in contact with their former exchange, and some have even had the opportunity to visit their former exchange in Germany. A number of the former exchanges have even immigrated to the U.S. where they have maintained close ties with their former host families.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES AGENDA SET FOR PORTLAND CONVENTION
By: Cindy Greer, Youth Development Director

Every time artists begin a new project they are looking at a blank canvas, but in their minds they are imagining the possibilities. The Grange youth were presented with a blank canvas at the close of last year's National Grange convention. We, the Oregon Convention Committee and I, have been working on creating an image in our minds of what this year's National Convention Youth activities will look like in Portland, Oregon.

Imagine the Possibilities!
Youth participating in the John Trimble Legislative Experience will arrive on Monday, November 11 to begin their experience as voting members of several National Convention committees and staff assistants for the week. Participants will have the opportunity to learn first hand how the National Grange develops its legislative policy.

Activities and workshops will begin on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 13 for State ambassadors and Grange Youth. Activities for the week include: workshops, social functions where our members can get acquainted, the Dutch Treat Pizza Party, the Idea Carnival, motivational speakers, community service activities, games, dances, a non-delegate tour, a costume party, a visit to the national session, recognition of ambassadors at the Night of Excellence, the presentation of the Caroline A. Hall Grangers Care project to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, opportunities to take the sixth and seventh degree and the GROW Club reunion.

The costume party held on Thursday evening will have a theme of "American P.I.E." (P.I.E. stands for Pioneers, Inventors, Entertainers or Entrepreneurs) Participants should be prepared to share who they have chosen to emulate.

Participants who are in need of assistance in finding a roommate for the National Convention can contact the National Grange Youth Development Director by phone at (970) 588-3386. Arrive ready have a great time while learning and developing leadership skills to use in your own Granges.
