Budget 328 State Capitol St. Paul, MN 55155 Dear
Senator Sams:
On
behalf of over 200,000 Grange members across the nation and in Minnesota,
I am writing to express my concern about the proposed 2004 - 2005 budget cuts
that will reduce state funding for the Minnesota Historical Society resulting
in the closing of the Oliver H. Kelley Farm by June 30, 2003. The Kelley Farm
plays a key role in Grange history; it was the homestead of the National Grange
founder and is considered "The Birthplace of Organized Agriculture in America."
The National
Grange acquired the property in the 1950's, eventually turning it over to the
Minnesota Historical Society in 1962. Kelley Farm received recognition from the
National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and is one of only
15 such landmarks in the entire state. Since then, the Grange has contributed
time, money and materials, such as antique farm implements, to allow visitors,
most of which are children, the opportunity to learn the history of agriculture
and witness the pioneer way of life. Although
approximately $300,000 worth of taxpayer funds go towards its operation, it is
not the only source of income the farm receives. In addition to revenues gained
through admission fees, sales items and financial support from the Grange, the
estimated 30,000 annual visitors to Kelley Farm contribute to the local economy
by staying in Minnesota hotels, eating in local restaurants and supporting other
local businesses. As a result, the Kelley Farm should be considered a financial
and cultural asset to the state as opposed to a liability. Because
the Oliver H. Kelley Farm contributes to the state of Minnesota on so many levels,
we urge you to reconsider your plans to close this irreplaceable landmark. On
behalf of the National Grange, I would like to thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, Kermit
Richardson President (Master) National Grange of the Order of Patrons of
Husbandry |
