Contact Your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative Asking Them to Remain in Legislative Session and Address the Nation's Economic Crisis

September 22, 2008

National Grange recently wrote to House and Senate Leadership asking them to remain in legislative session to address the nation’s economic crisis. The U.S. House of Representatives is tentatively scheduled to adjourn on September 26, 2008. The Senate has not yet determined their adjournment date.

Background

The National Grange is urging Congress to remain in legislative session and not recess for the general election to address the expanding financial crisis facing our nation.

The National Grange strongly believes that federal intervention in the financial market is essential to end the worst financial crisis in decades. America’s economy is facing unprecedented challenges, and Congress must quickly address vital resolutions to our nation’s economic woes. Energy prices remain far too high. Taxpayers are counting on our nation’s elected leaders to address the financial crisis and are looking to Congress to improve the health of United States financial institutions. Government steps will be welcomed by financial markets and by the American public. To leave Washington now would be devastating and another crippling step toward economic failure. Remaining in legislative session and passing economic reviving legislation, on the other hand, would help restore our national financial institutions to a sound footing.

We urged House and Senate leadership to keep Congress in session and work with the Administration and financial experts to develop and implement a legislative package aimed at revitalizing our nation’s economy.
