The
U.S. Supreme Court has set March 24 as the date it will hear oral arguments over
whether public school
students can be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the words "under
God." The Grassfire.net, which is a non-profit organization that builds an alliance
of grassroots citizens through online petitions and media efforts, has submitted
an amicus (i.e. "friend of the court") brief to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf
of hundreds of thousands of citizens who support the Pledge of Allegiance. The
brief argues that holding that the United States Constitution prevents school
districts from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, in its present form, is inherently
contradictory to a strict reading of the Constitution and the founding principles
of our nation. Click
here to review the brief. Their goal is to rally 200,000 citizens who want
their support of the Pledge noted in the official Supreme Court record of the
case. The National
Grange has supported a constitutional amendment to maintain the current wording
of the Pledge of Allegiance. The Grange has the following policy regarding keeping
"under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance: "The
National Grange strongly supports The Star Spangled Banner as our National Anthem
and its solemn and dignified rendition and the Pledge of Allegiance in its present
form with the words "under God" and "Liberty," and "In God We Trust" remaining
on our currency and as our national motto."
With
the U.S. Supreme Court set to decide whether or not the phrase "under God" can
stay in the Pledge on March 24, signing this important brief gives citizens like
us one final opportunity to demonstrate our support for keeping the Pledge as
it is. Click
