| - Now
House-Senate Conferees are debating on whether or not to include the language
that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas drilling
in the final version of energy legislation.
-
Please call, fax or e-mail Congressman Richard Pombo, House Resources Committee
Chairman, and express your support for opening ANWR!
The
House-Senate Conferees are now working out the final version of 108th Congress
Comprehensive Energy Bill. House and Senate passed a different version of energy
bill -- the House passed HR
6 by a 247-175 vote on April 11 and the Senate passed S
14 by 84-14 vote on July 31 -- and only House energy bill included the language
that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas drilling.
Therefore, the House/Senate Conference Committee will decide whether or not to
allow ANWR drilling in the final legislation. At this critical juncture, it is
important for you to speak up your support for opening ANWR. At
a meeting with grassroots Grange activists from California in Washington DC on
September 24, Rep. Pombo and his staff specifically asked for the Grange's assistance
in generating additional grassroots support for including the House of Representative
provisions on ANWR in the final text of the comprehensive national energy legislation
now before Congress. According
to Rep. Richard Pombo, House Resources Committee Chairman: -
Advanced American technology will enable us to produce energy in ANWR with incredible
environmental safety. As the world leader in environmental protection, it is irresponsible
for us to import oil from third-world countries with virtually zero environmental
laws.
- Including
the ANWR provision in the energy plan will have profound benefits for the economy,
jobs, national security, and the global environment.
-
The average estimate for economically recoverable oil in ANWR is 10.3 billion
barrels. That is double the amount of all the oil in Texas, and almost half the
total U.S. proven reserves.
The National Grange's policy on energy production in the ANWR is as follows: The
National Grange favors the complete utilization of petroleum and the other mineral
resources, including the exploration and production of oil reserves on the coastal
plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and from any outer continental shelf
lease sales in accordance with the terms of an environmentally sound development
plan.
