Grangers Among 125 Who Visit D.C. to Advocate for Rural Broadband
More than 125 farmers, ranchers, teachers, small business owners and others from rural communities and small towns across the country gathered in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday as part of a "Broadband WORKS for Rural America" advocacy day. Participants delivered the message to policymakers that increased access to high-speed Internet is a critical component of job creation and economic development, and is necessary to ensuring a prosperous future for citizens living in remote or hard-to-reach communities. National Grange Applauds USDA's Commitment to Rural Broadband Infrastructure
On Tuesday, August 23, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that rural communities in 18 states will receive more than $103 million in funding for projects that will provide broadband access to underserved rural communities. The money will fund 23 projects across the country and is expected to create hundreds of new jobs. Read more

The National Grange, America's oldest rural advocacy group, has announced its support for a proposal submitted to the FCC by six of the nation’s leading broadband providers in their effort to speed broadband deployment to the more than 4 million Americans residing in rural areas by modernizing the use of the federal Universal Service Fund. Contact Your U.S. Senator TODAY to Urge Their Support of H.R. 872
Currently, the U.S. Senate has scheduled a hearing on H.R. 872 – Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2011, which seeks to keep the regulation of insecticides, fungicides and rodenticides under the Federal Insecticide, Fungacide, and Rodentacide Act or FIFRA. H.R. 872 passed overwhelmingly in the U.S. House of Representatives with bi-partisan support and will now be heard in the Senate Agriculture Committee early next week. Read more

The National Grange to FCC: Combined AT&T-T-Mobile Food for Rural America
The National Grange, the nation’s oldest national agricultural organization, today issued its support for the merger between AT&T and T-Mobile USA. In a letter filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on behalf of its more than 200,000 members, the Grange argued that the merger between the two companies will make additional investment in wireless broadband for rural areas a certainty, providing rural communities with adequate and reliable access to modern wireless communications technology. National Grange President Details Opposition to Proposed Elimination of Saturday Mail Service with Idaho State Senate Agriculture Committee
On Tuesday, National Grange Master Ed Luttrell, of Sandy, Ore., appeared before the Idaho State Senate Agriculture Committee to discuss the Grange ’ s opposition to the proposed elimination by the U.S. Postal Service of Saturday mail delivery. Idaho State Grange President Donald Johnson, of Meridian, Idaho, introduced Luttrell, who had testified before the Postal Regulatory Commission in September. Luttrell told committee members that The Grange feels the proposed mail service reduction would be detrimental to the lives of those living in rural areas. Read more


National Grange Welcomes New Communications Director
On March 29, the National Grange welcomed Amanda Leigh Brozana to the staff as Communications Director in the Washington, DC office. Brozana, of Orwigsburg, Pa., has a background in journalism, education and public relations, but said it is her rural upbringing that contributes most to her passion for working at the Grange. National Grange Reacts to PRC Advisory Opinion on Eliminating Saturday Mail Service
On Thursday, March 24, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) posted their Advisory Opinion to the United States Postal Service on the Reduction of Mail Service from six to five days (PRC Docket No. N2010-1). The Advisory Opinion notes that U.S.P.S. projected cost savings were actually overstated by $1.0 billion, that their net revenue losses were underreported by about $0.2 billion, and that the U.S.P.S neglected to evaluate the impact that the proposal would have on customers who reside or conduct business in rural, remote or non-contiguous areas. Contact Your U.S. Congressman TODAY to Urge Their Opposition to the Garrett Amendment to H.R. 1 Eliminating MAP Funding
Currently the U.S. House of Representatives is debating H.R. 1, the FY 11 Continuing Resolution (CR) which must be passed in order for the government to continue operating.  Rep. Scott Garrett’s (R-NJ) amendment to eliminate MAP funding would end a successful program which forms a partnership between non-profit U.S. agricultural trade associations, farmer cooperatives, non-profit state-regional trade groups, small businesses, and USDA to share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities. These programs help to open new markets for smaller organizations and co-ops, and help maintain existing level playing fields of access. Although, the House completed the agriculture section of the CR last night, we have to assume that the Garrett Amendment will be offered. Read more

S.510 would prohibit farmers, food producers, food manufacturing facilities, and U.S. importers from retaining full control of their operations, products, product distribution, and business records by granting unprecedented authority to the Secretaries of Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Homeland Security. S. 510 is currently on the floor of the U.S. Senate and a vote on Final Passage in the Senate is scheduled for November 29, 2010. Please Email your Senator today and let them know that Food Safety is important in rural America but this measure misses the target. Read more

National Grange Supports Agricultural Effort to Extend Tax Cuts and Repeal Estate Tax
The National Grange, in a collaborative effort to relieve the financial struggles experienced by rural Americans, joined the Agricultural Retailers Association and other agricultural groups to urge Senate Leaders to both extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 and repeal the estate tax.
