A&M University Student Interns at the National Grange
Washington,
February 6, 2004 - John Beazley, a student at Texas A&M University-Commerce,
is currently interning in the Legislative Department at the National Grange. The
legislative intern position is a challenging, educational and experience-building
one for a student who is interested in issues and policies affecting rural America.
Beazley,
a double major in Animal Science and Political Science at Texas A&M, will be interning
with the National Grange until May 7, 2004 through a program in Washington, D.C.
called the Institute for Experiential Learning. The program allows students to
intern with an organization for four days a week and attend classes one day per
week. The classes are designed to enhance the Capital City experience by giving
the students an opportunity to visit a different branch of government or a specific
governmental agency every week. Beazley,
a senior, is very interested in public policy and governmental regulation, especially
pertaining to agriculture. During his time in Washington, D.C, he expects to learn
about the Grange's grassroots approach to advocating for legislative policies.
Not only does Beazley plan to take full advantage of being in Washington, D.C.
by seeing our government in action, but he also plans to experience the cultural
and social aspects of this diverse city. Beazley
will assist the legislative team by collecting and organizing facts and data to
support Grange policy; researching complex issues; developing written, informational
and advocacy products including position letters, testimonies, regulatory comments,
speeches, talking points, radio/media commentary, press releases and newsletter
articles; tracking, monitoring and reporting on the status of legislation, regulations
and other public policy initiatives of interest to the Grange and attending seminars,
briefings and educational programs on a variety of issues and topics. |
