Seventh Degree

Come Take or Witness the Seventh Degree in Cromwell, CT

By John A. Valentine, High Priest of Demeter

To attain and understand the Seventh Degree of the National Grange, you must begin in the Subordinate Grange. To begin, you must belong to a Subordinate Grange where our members become acquainted with the first four degrees. The Fifth Degree is taken at the Pomona level, and the Sixth Degree is available at the State and National Grange Conventions. Once you have attained the first six degrees, you are an eligible candidate for the Seventh Degree. This degree is only given in conjunction with the Annual National Grange Convention.

To build to the Seventh Degree, you must understand the lower degrees and what they stand for. In the salutation, we begin with, “A good patron places faith in God, nurtures hope, dispenses charity, is noted for fidelity, and will persevere.” As you study the lower degrees and come to the National Grange to receive or witness the Seventh Degree, remember that all the Degrees of the Grange point
to three things:

  • That all mankind is answerable to one God
  • That all life depends on Nature’s God
  • That everyone is responsible for his/her own actions

Thus, the teachings of the various Degrees are many and varied, but when the lessons are learned, they enhance our lives.

The first conferral of the Seventh Degree was in 1884 for eight candidates. Since then, there have been 306,020 members who have taken the Seventh Degree. We would like all of you to become members of the Assembly of Demeter. So come and take the Seventh Degree or see it again so you can help explain the value of Grange ritual to new members.

To take the Seventh Degree you need to complete the application form below and show proof of current membership with passwords or membership cards. To witness the Seventh Degree, you must have the proper identification, passwords, or membership card.

If you have had the Seventh Degree, you may come and witness the conferral again and attend the convocation/business meeting of the Assembly of Demeter. The Assembly of Demeter consists of all members who have taken the Seventh Degree and maintain membership in a Subordinate Grange. The officers and voting members of the Assembly of Demeter consist of the present and past voting
delegates of the National Grange.

We do our best to present you with an impressive conferral with the pomp and circumstance that you deserve. Take advantage of taking or witnessing the Seventh Degree in Cromwell!
